Standard PVC or insulated aluminium shutter, installed, VAT included. Motorising a shutter you already have: €180–220. Without a new window there is a €200 minimum order, which no longer applies from two shutters; the "window kept" column is for a single shutter. For comparison, the Portuguese market runs at €120–280 for a manual shutter installed and €150–600 for an electric one.

Five parts. At the survey we check each one, especially the box.
Getting power to the box usually means chasing walls and repainting. Two of the three ways to fit the motor need no cable.
No cable at all. The battery is recharged now and then, or by a small panel. Radio remote.
Panel on the box or guide. Ideal on sunny façades; on a north-facing one we check at the survey.
The simplest for many years, when there is power near the box or the house is being renovated.
No strap means no slot above the window letting draughts in. Old, heavy shutter? Swap the curtain for aluminium before motorising. Wi-Fi is optional: a separate module adds timers and phone control.
What changes is the curtain. We also fit adjustable-louvre external blinds, quoted after the survey.
The most affordable
Light and cheapest. For small and medium openings; insulates little and gives more to knocks.
The most common
Foam-filled slats: better insulation and more wind resistance. The usual choice with a motor.
The most rigid
For wide doors and houses left closed. The dearest.
Real jobs with shutters: some with a new shutter, some with the original shutter kept.

A box that opens on the inside is a permanent air leak. Combined unit, compact exterior box or insulated box with a motor: it depends on the job.
Shutter box guide →A shutter stops the sun before the glass. Portaria 138-I/2021 counts the solar factor with shading closed: in summer the shutter is part of the window.
Windows in the Algarve →Extruded aluminium is the most rigid; with a motor there is no strap on show and timers make the house look lived in. Survey and fitting with whoever holds the key; the rest by email and WhatsApp.
Window security →Like-for-like changes nothing you can see. A new colour, type or box does.
In an apartment building, changing the shutter colour, adding a visible box where there was none or changing the type on one flat alters the building's architectural line. The Civil Code requires approval by the owners' meeting representing two thirds of the building's value (article 1422, no. 3).
The planning regime (RJUE, article 6-A) exempts window frame replacement from a licence but does not mention shutters: municipal regulations apply. In listed buildings or protection zones, the câmara also has a say. We check at the survey.
Short answers to what people ask while choosing.
With a new window, a manual shutter for a 120×120 cm opening comes to €150–190; a motor adds about €120. Without replacing the window, the minimum order is €200; the survey and travel are always included. The calculator on this page gives an estimate for your sizes, VAT included.
Yes. Battery and solar motors charge themselves and work by radio remote: no power needed at the box, no chasing. If there is already power near the box, or the house is being renovated, a wired motor is the simplest option for many years.
It depends on how much sun the façade gets. On a south or west façade, usually yes; on a north-facing or heavily shaded one we prefer a rechargeable battery or a wired motor. We check this at the survey before suggesting anything.
Battery and solar motors are not affected by a power cut. A wired motor stops until the power comes back; where that is a worry, we suggest a battery motor or a model with a manual emergency override.
In many cases, yes: we remove the strap and its winder and fit the motor inside the axle. If the shutter is heavy or old plastic, it is better to swap the curtain for aluminium so the motor is not overworked. Motorising one shutter comes to €180–220. Photos of the box sent by WhatsApp are often enough to quote, and we come once, to fit it.
A simple motor with a remote does everything locally. If you want timers or control from your phone abroad, a separate smart module can be added; it is not built into every motor and is not needed for the shutter to work.
PVC is lighter and cheaper and suits small and medium openings. Insulated aluminium (foam-filled slats) insulates better, stands up to more wind and handles wider openings. Extruded aluminium is the most rigid, for large doors and houses left closed.
The manufacturer's warranty on the shutter and the motor, which varies by brand. We work with several manufacturers and state each part's warranty in the written quote.
If the new shutter matches the old one (same colour, type and box), the façade does not change. If it changes the colour, adds a visible box where there was none or alters the look of the building, the Portuguese Civil Code requires approval by the owners’ meeting representing two thirds of the building’s value (article 1422, no. 3).
No, we only install. But a broken strap is often the moment to get rid of it: motorising the shutter removes the strap for good, and if the curtain is old or has broken slats, we replace the whole shutter and the window stays.
